Model Overview

The Mazda CX-5 is a core C-segment SUV under Changan Mazda and a global sales pillar for the Japanese marque. As the first mass-production model to fully incorporate "SKYACTIV" technology and the "Kodo" design language, the CX-5 debuted in 2012, setting the design and engineering benchmark for all subsequent Mazda models. In the Chinese domestic market, the CX-5 is built and distributed by Changan Mazda. The current core offering on sale is the 2025 model year lineup launched in June 2025, powered exclusively by a 2.0L engine with official list prices starting from RM125,800. In the showroom market, retail prices for selected variants have dropped to as low as RM115,800 after promotional discounts. Built around the brand's signature "Jinba-Ittai" (horse and rider as one) driving philosophy, its direct rivals include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
Design Language
The CX-5 embodies Mazda's "Kodo: Soul of Motion" design philosophy, focusing on dynamic vitality as its aesthetic core. Up front, it features the signature large shield grille flanked by sleek LED headlamps that seamlessly blend into the surround, creating a striking visual presence. In profile, the SUV sports flowing, athletic contours with a classic long bonnet and short rear overhang, accented by an upswept waistline that gives it an eager, poised stance. At the rear, the clean and tidy design is complemented by twin circular exhaust tips to reinforce its sporty credentials. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,575 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. For 2025, the range gains a new Black Obsidian Option Package, offering an optional 7-inch digital instrument cluster on the base variant, alongside black roof rails and Burgundy Red leather upholstery on mid-to-high-spec variants. The driver-oriented cabin adopts a horizontally balanced layout, finished with extensive soft-touch materials and metallic trims to deliver a clean, upscale ambience.
Powertrain and Performance
The 2025 Mazda CX-5 is powered by a 2.0L SKYACTIV-G naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 114 kW (155 PS) and 200 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode (6AT). Combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.05–7.15 L/100 km on the WLTC cycle, and the unit runs on RON 92 petrol. Engineered with a high 13.0:1 compression ratio, this SKYACTIV powerplant delivers a linear and progressive power delivery while optimising fuel efficiency. The previous 2.5L engine option has been discontinued for the 2025 model year, with all variants adopting a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration.
Chassis and Handling
Chassis dynamics remain the CX-5's strongest selling point. The vehicle rides on a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The chassis tuning stays true to Mazda's driver-focused DNA, offering precise steering, intuitive front-end response, and commendable body roll control through the bends. The steering weighting feels reassuringly weighted with virtually zero dead centre play, earning it a reputation among driving enthusiasts as the "poor man's BMW". Compared to the torsion beam setups commonly found in this price bracket, the rear multi-link layout provides superior bump absorption and high-speed stability, achieving a well-judged balance between engaging handling and everyday pliancy.
Cabin and Equipment
On the tech front, the 2025 CX-5 comes standard across the board with a 10.25-inch central infotainment display and a 7-inch colour instrument cluster, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Baidu CarLife connectivity. Notably, the 2025 model year marks the first time the central display supports direct touchscreen operation. Stepping up to the range-topping Pro variant adds a 360-degree surround-view camera, all-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS). For added comfort and convenience, mid-to-high variants are equipped with power-folding wing mirrors, an electric sunroof, one-touch power windows all round, keyless entry, and walk-away auto-lock functions. Boot capacity easily accommodates everyday family hauling, with split-folding rear seatbacks providing versatile cargo expansion.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety-wise, the CX-5 comes standard with 7 airbags across all variants. It also benefits from an upgraded i-ACTIVSENSE Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite, comprising Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Smart Brake Support, Adaptive High-beam System, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The high-spec Pro variant further incorporates a 360-degree surround-view monitor and all-speed adaptive cruise, bringing its automated driving capabilities to Level 2 (L2). Underneath, Mazda's high-rigidity SKYACTIV-Body structure ensures exemplary crash protection and occupant safety.
Market Performance and Verdict
The Mazda CX-5 has maintained a relatively modest sales momentum in China, registering 30,759 units throughout 2025. Moving into 2026, cumulative sales from January to May reached 14,546 units, with May alone accounting for 4,404 units. Within Changan Mazda's portfolio, the CX-5 remains the top-selling nameplate, contributing approximately 35% of the carmaker's total sales volume in 2025. In showrooms, cash rebates have widened to between RM30,000 and RM40,000, bringing entry prices down to the RM130,000 threshold.
According to motoring media and owners alike, the CX-5's standout strengths lie in its striking "Kodo" styling, class-leading driving dynamics, and the proven smoothness and reliability of its SKYACTIV powertrain. On the flip side, its main drawbacks remain a relatively tight rear legroom, mediocre NVH refinement, and a lack of punch compared to similarly priced turbocharged rivals. Notably, Mazda globally revealed the next-generation CX-5 in May 2026; the fully redesigned SUV boasts enlarged exterior dimensions and a roomier cabin while retaining its classic proportions. The all-new model is priced from 3.3 million yen (approx. RM157,000) in Japan, offering 2.5L petrol and 2.5L mild-hybrid powertrain options. Its eventual arrival in the Chinese market is certainly one to watch.
